I believe that I needed to select Custom install and answer a bunch of questions (because the Automatic install failed probably because it didn't know what Neon was). My final note says that selecting Qt4 allowed it to be successfully installed (selecting Qt5 did not work). I tried both sudo apt remove hplip and sudo apt purge hplip, then in both cases reinstalled with sudo apt install hplip. So I want to get rid of the updated version and reinstall the version that came with 18.04. I don't remember how I figured out these needed to be installed - either it told me, or I was guessing. I installed a more recent version of hplip than the one distributed with 18.04, which made it impossible to install hp-plugin properly. I have notes about the packages that needed to be installed (these are in addition to what I had installed before this, so this may not be a complete list, and may be extra packages not needed as I kept installing until I got it to work): pyqt5-dev, libnet-snmp-perl, libsane-dev, python-pil, libcups2-dev, libusb-dev, libtool, libsnmp-dev, libgusb-dev, 5, python-qt4-dbus,, python3-pyqt4, python-dbus-dev, python-notify, pyqt5-dev-tools, python-pyqt5, python3-qtpy, libtool-bin, python-qt4-dev, ptqt4-dev-tools, all other pyqt5. sudo apt-get -target-release precise-backports install hplip IMHO, this should be the technically best solution to get a very recent version of HPLIP (at least for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) as this solution does not pose the problems mentioned in Javier Rivera’s answer. Im using OpenSuSE 10.2, hplip-hpijs-2.7.7-21.1 and hplip-2.7.7-21.1. This can be downloaded from, select Ubuntu. Regain independence and stop being a burden. Get back to normal everyday activities such as walking, getting in and out of a car, getting on and off the toilet. Looks like the current version is hplib-3.19.12.run. You may believe that hip replacement is the only way to: Get rid of the constant pain. They are expensive and difficult to use with. It doesn't look like I have complete notes on what I did, but they say that I ran hplib-3.19.1.run, which implies that I downloaded it first. I like HP, but their approach to toner cartridges has made me rethink. Downloading the file and then choosing 'Select and install an existing local copy of the plug-in file' causes the plug-in installer to hang. I did get it installed and it works (both printing and scanning). Choosing 'Download and install the plug-in from an HP authorized server' produces an error: /home/ /.hplip- 3.20.11- plugin. How do you try to install it? I seem to remember having a similar problem.
